Your Petitioners - Citizens of Tasmania draw attention to wildlife safety measures on Tasmanian roads.
(a) A range of solutions exist to protect wildlife from vehicle impact, however, the Tasmanian Government has chosen not to employ measures that have been successfully trialled and implemented in other states and overseas.
(b) Government has a duty of care to protect Tasmania's wildlife and are failing this community responsibility.
(c) Government has a "Health and Safety" duty of care to Tasmanian citizens. Current roadkill levels represent a physical risk to drivers and a "mental health" trigger for many citizens.
(d) Tasmania's shameful title of "Roadkill Capital of Australia" affects the state's "brand" and leaves visitors with a negative impression.
And your Petitioners request that -
(a) The Tasmanian Government coordinate wildlife road safety measures at Municipal, State and Federal levels. This should be conducted as a priority within the Government's recently announced COVID-19 Roadworks Stimulus Program, and should be an enduring commitment.
(b) Wildlife safety measures should include the following at identified roadkill "hotspots":
(i) Virtual wildlife safety fences.
(ii) Wildlife roadway overpasses.
(iii) Wildlife roadway underpasses.
(iv) Wildlife rope crossing bridges.
(v) Other safety measures deemed suitable by location.
(c) The Government's response to this issue should extend beyond road signs. Active measures that physically protect animals from vehicles need to be implemented.
