TO: The Honourable the President and Members of the Legislative Council (Tasmania)
The undersigned Citizens of Tasmania draw your attention to: 1. The importance of jobs for timber workers, their families and communities and the key contribution that the timber industry makes to the economy of Tasmania. 2. The opportunity provided by the Forests Agreement Bill 2012 and the Tasmanian Forest Agreement 2012 to stabilise the timber industry and provide an opportunity for profitable investment and growth by: (a) securing an ongoing, vibrant timber industry in Tasmania based on native forests and, increasingly in the future, plantations; (b) restoring market certainty based on an improved independently certified timber supply for mills and timber manufacturers enabling Tasmanian products to be supported in the international market place; (c) offering a better future for all Tasmanians by providing a lasting end to the conflict over Tasmania's native forests through commitment to a long-term durable agreement; (d) providing for strong, resilient communities and decent and secure jobs for workers and contractors; and (e) stimulating research and development to assist in driving these outcomes. Your Petitioners ask that the Legislative Council will consider and pass the Tasmanian Forest Agreements Bill 2012, to secure the future of jobs for workers in the Tasmanian timber industry.
